John Steuart Curry

Upper Midwestern Artists | 1897–1946 | Dunavant, Kansas

John Steuart Curry achieved fame for painting his homeland of Kansas…while living on the east coast. Unlike Thomas Hart Benton, who moved back to Missouri after achieving success on the East Coast, Curry never resettled in Kansas. After receiving national attention in Time Magazine, he soon left for Wisconsin, where he lived and worked during the last ten years of his life. Curry’s style was quite straightforward in comparison with Benton’s or Wood’s. His best known works used Kansas as the subject, and often included oncoming storms or tornadoes.
