Max Weber

All Artists | 1881–1961 |  Poland

Weber was born in Bialystok, in what was then part of the Russian Empire. He immigrated with his family in 1910 to Brooklyn, New York. He studied at the Pratt Institute and became an art teacher in Virginia and Minnesota, before saving enough money to live in Europe. For four years, he worked in Paris, studying with Henri Mattise and befriending the most avant-garde artists of the day. When he returned to New York in 1909, he became the first major American artist working in Cubism. In 1921, he moved to a more pastoral setting on Long Island. His works became much less abstracted, while still maintaining a modern style.
