Glenda Drennen, a native of South Dakota, now resides in Sioux City, IA. She maintains Watermark Studio where she creates original watercolors and water media paintings. Her creativity was already apparent in childhood, and she has been painting watercolors professionally for nearly 40 years. This award wining artist has earned signature membership in the Iowa Watercolor Society and Watercolor USA, Springfield, MO. She is a popular, sought-after watercolor workshop instructor. She has become one of the most popular teachers at the Art Center. If you haven’t taken a class with her, this exhibition of her recent paintings might just inspire you.

The Artist Says:

The most exhilarating thing about painting with watercolor is to take advantage of its somewhat unpredictable nature – something I do even before deciding what subject to paint. As a first step I apply a serendipitous textured backdrop that will glow through succeeding transparent layers in the finished painting. Only then do I study the patterns and colors and decide what to make of it, often painting in series. The resulting paintings usually have recognizable imagery but are also rich with texture, visually entertaining, and sometimes include surprises and perhaps a subtle hint of my sense of humor. I still practice the time honored tradition of transparent watercolor, but I also embrace the use of other water media and collage to broaden the creative possibilities. I never tire of this medium, and I think this excitement is evident in my paintings.
