Welcome to the Sioux City Art Center Biennial: Climate / Change, a celebration of art, in all media, that captures the spirit and creative voices of artists living in Iowa and a 300-mile radius of Sioux City. This year’s exhibition showcases a powerful mix of emerging and established artists whose work engages with the unique cultural, social, and environmental narratives of our time.

This year, we invited Beth Gollnick, associate curator at the Des Moines Art Center to jury the exhibition. When reflecting on the process, she said, “It was a great privilege to review the work of the nearly two hundred talented artists who submitted entries for the Sioux City Art Center Biennial. Each of the artists in the show was selected for their distinctive engagement with the question of how a changing climate impacts our world, country, and region. I was struck by the diversity of perspectives through which applicants considered the prompt, from moving depictions of the natural landscape, to compelling visual interpretations of scientific data, to abstract art that reflects the colors and forms of our environment. Together, their work captures the essence of this complex historical moment.”

The artists who were selected employ a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and printmaking, demonstrating the breadth and depth of contemporary artistic practice. The works on view here are not just expressions of individual creativity but are also commentaries on the broader societal issues that resonate within and beyond our region.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the artists who made the Biennial possible. We’d also like to thank Beth Gollnick for her time and energy during the jurying process. We hope that this exhibition will leave you with a renewed sense of connection to our region and a new-found appreciation for the transformative power of art.
