2026 Biennial: Interstates
April 16, 2026 – August 9, 2026
Opening reception, April 16, 5 – 7 p.m.
This exhibition welcomed original work, created between 2024-26 by artists 18 and older who currently live in Iowa or within 300 miles of Sioux City. Artworks in all media can be submitted. Artists are encouraged to consider how these networks of travel, exchange, and crossing can be understood in visual, material, or conceptual ways. Work might respond to the history of rivers and roads, the everyday experience of traffic and bridges, or the ways art and culture travel across borders. Proposals can be rooted in personal perspective or public life.
While this part of the country is sometimes seen as unchanging, the interstates tell a different story. They remind us that this region has always been about movement: of rivers, people, products, and of history. Bridges now connect neighborhoods and even states, joining Morningside to downtown and Sioux City, Iowa to South Sioux City, Nebraska. Interstates are a metaphor for connection, for proximity and distance. Just as the highways cross boundaries and bring communities together, this exhibition highlights how art travels across multiple states while remaining rooted in local life.
