Sioux City Art Center Announces Time Capsule Project

During the month of March, the Art Center is celebrating 25 years in the building. The actual anniversary is March 1. On that evening, the Art Center hosted an event and dinner, during which the contents of the time capsule in the middle of the Art Center’s atrium floor were revealed after being placed there on the building’s first anniversary in 1998. The contents included packets of materials placed by families, printed materials and merchandise from the early days of the building, a local phonebook, and photographs of staff and board members. And, they also included artworks produced by children of the time. Most of these items are currently on display on the Art Center’s second floor.

Now that the time capsule is empty, the Art Center is beginning the work of finding new things to store for the next 25 years. On March 5, everyone is invited to attend a free open house to celebrate the building. Children will have the opportunity to work with teachers and create artworks that will be placed back into the time capsule. On March 25, the new contents will be set into the time capsule, where they will remain until March 1, 2047. Mark your calendars now!

The open house begins at 10:30am and runs through 2:00pm. Art Center teachers will be stationed in the first-floor atrium to help guide visitors through the exciting project, as they imagine their lives 25 years from now. This event is free for everyone with complimentary snacks and beverages.
